The liquids limit imposed at European airports could be about to be lifted. But only at some airports for now.

The European Commission says new so-called C3 scanners will soon be approved for use.

“That means that passengers can have containers containing more than 100 millilitres of liquids”, an EU official confirmed.

It is an intergovernmental organisation called the European Civil Aviation Conference ECAC that is responsible for the technical approval rather than the EU and it is not clear exactly when that is going to happen.

But for travellers, it cannot come soon enough.

Dublin Airport is one of a handful that has already installed C3 scanners in preparation.

Once the ECAC has given its recommendation, the EU can give the go-ahead, an official confirmed.

“Hopefully this decision and the green light can be given imminently.”

Airports operating with the new scanners will be able to authorise passengers to take up to two litres of liquids.
