European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is on her way to Paraguay to sign the EU’s controversial trade deal with Mercosur this weekend.
The EU-Mercosur deal has been more than 20 years in the making.
The Mercosur trade block includes the south American countries of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
A majority of EU member states backed the trade deal in a vote last week. Ireland, France and Hungary voted against.
The agreement will lead to tariff reductions for a wide range of goods and services.
The EU says this will open new markets for European exports.
But the Irish government shares the concerns of Irish farmers that the deal could undermine their businesses.
The European Commission insists that numerous safeguards and limits restrict the amount of south American agri produce enough to protect European farmers.
President von der Leyen will sign the agreement in Paraguay on Saturday.
But the deal still needs the approval of the European Parliament. A vote is scheduled next week.
A demonstration by farmers is expected to take place outside the parliament in Strasbourg.
The President of the Irish Farmers Association, Francie Gorman, has confirmed that he will take part.
