British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has suggested the UK might consider rejoining the European Union.
In a speech to the Labour party conference yesterday he promised to lay out “options” for Britain’s future relationship with the EU.
But in interviews on Wednesday he went further, saying that rejoining the European Union could be one of those options.
French President, Emmanual Macron, said doing so would be a “wise move.” He also praised Andy Burnham’s “boldness”.
But he warned that there can be no cherry picking.
“One cannot pick and choose among the [European] Union’s freedoms, nor decide to take only what suits one’s interests while rejecting the rest,” he said.
Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, said he would welcome the UK back “with open arms.”
Other EU figures have also been enthusiastic about the idea.
Burnham has promised to lay out his ideas ahead of an EU-UK summit which is due to be held before the end of Ireland’s Presidency of the European Council.
Although a date has not yet been finalised. It is understood that it will most likely be held in Brussels in November.
