The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) has launched a campaign urging people not to treat medicines like sweets.
It’s part of a Europe-wide campaign co-ordinated by the European Medicines Agency to try and reduce misuse of prescription and over the counter medicines.
“You can buy some medicines without a prescription. But don’t forget – they’re still medicines and come with instructions for use. Using them incorrectly can lead to side effects and even health risks”, the HRPA warns.
Drugs that are readily available in Ireland in shops and supermarkets including painkillers, nasal sprays and cough syrup can be dangerous if not used as advised in the instructions.
“Reading the patient information leaflet helps you to use your medicine safely and in the right way. Taking a few moments to read it can help you to protect your health”, the HPRA says.
“No medicine is without risk. Incorrect use can lead to unpleasant side effects or even addiction”, the European Medicines Agency warns.
It is the first time medicines agencies across Europe, including the HPRA in Ireland, have launched a co-ordinated campaign EU-wide.
Lorraine Nolan, Chief Executive of the HPRA said it was a message everyone can get behind.
“The HPRA is pleased to support the first-ever pan-European campaign focused on the safe use of over-the-counter medicines.
This important public health initiative aims to raise awareness about using medicines safely and effectively.
To get the best results from your medicine, we encourage everyone to read the information on the packaging and in the patient information leaflet carefully.
If you’re unsure about anything or have concerns, always speak to a healthcare professional.”
