Taoiseach, Simon Harris, says Israel must stop firing on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.
His demand is echoed by President Biden and other world leaders.
The Israeli military has admitted that “two UN peacekeepers were inadvertently hurt during IDF [Israel Defense Forces] combat against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.”
The United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon, UNIFIL, includes Irish personnel.
The Taoiseach says he will raise the issue with his EU counterparts at a summit in Brussels next week.
In a joint statement last night, France, Spain and Italy said:
“We express our outrage after several peacekeepers were injured in Naqoura. These attacks
constitute serious violation of the obligations of Israel under UNSCR 1701 and under
humanitarian international law. Those attacks are unjustifiable and shall immediately come to
an end.”
Simon Harris says he will urge the EU to push for peace without delay.
“I will be calling for an immediate ceasefire that can allow us to focus on implementation of UN Resolution 1701 and get people back to their homes”, the Taoiseach said in a statement published this morning.
