Tony Murphy has been re-elected as President of the European Court of Auditors for another three years.
The Irishman has been the EU’s watchdog chief since 2022.
The European Court of Auditors (ECA) is the European Union’s independent external auditor.
It is responsible for holding the European Union account over its spending commitments. And it isn’t afraid to pull its punches.
Earlier this year the ECA criticised EU defence spending as “modest” and warned that there were serious questions about the EU’s ability to move military staff, equipment and supplies swiftly across the continent.
Another report, last year, was critical of EU funding to try and disincentivise migration from Africa.
The ECA warned that the €5 billion Africa fund lacked “priorities to tackle the root causes of instability, irregular migration, and displacement”.
Tony Murphy worked as an auditor in Ireland becoming Senior Auditor at the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General in Dublin in the 1990s before pursuing a career with the EU.
Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne TD, has extended his congratulations to Tony Murphy following his re-election as President of the ECA.
Minister Byrne said: “I sincerely want to congratulate Tony on his re-election as president of the ECA.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your work in your first term. I very much I look forward to continuing our successful collaborative work for the next three years.”
