The government has announced millions in support for Ireland’s film industry, if the aid is approved by the EU.

“I am today announcing the introduction of a new Tax credit for Unscripted Production, subject to European Commission approval”, said Minister for Finance, Jack Chambers, in his speech in the Dáil.

“The credit will be available at a rate of 20 per cent on qualifying expenditure of up to €15 million and, similar to the other audio-visual reliefs, projects will be required to pass a cultural test.”

Unscripted production covers different kinds of TV themes such as documentaries and reality shows.

The government has also announced €20 million in tax credit for feature film production.

Both these measures will need to be approved by the European Commission under state aid rules.

Before Brexit, the UK had generous tax incentives for its film industry which had been approved under EU rules.
