Electric cars now make up close to one in five of new vehicles, according to latest figures.

In the first six months of 2025, electric car sales were up 27 percent at 13,102 vehicles compared to just over 10,000 during the same period last year.

That means 17 percent of new cars are electric, according to data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Volkswagen was the most popular brand sold last month, followed by Škoda, Hyundai and the electric-only car maker, Tesla.

Hybrid and electric cars together now make up around 45 percent of new car sales.

Last month, the Climate Council warned Ireland will fail to meet national and EU targets for electric car targets without a dramatic increase in support by the government.

The Irish government wants electric cars to make up 30 percent of all vehicles on the road by 2030.

The government recently announced new grants to encourage the uptake. But there’s still a long way to go.
