The takeover of Irish contractor Dornan Engineering Group by Turner Construction has been approved by the European Commission.

Dornan is a specialist mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and commissioning engineering contractor with operations in Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe.

The company employs more than 1,000 people and is based in Cork. It is expected to turnover €700 million this year.

Dornan is being acquired by Turner Construction Company, the largest building contractor in North America with an order book in the region of $18 billion per year.

“The European Commission concluded that the notified transaction would not raise competition concerns, given that the companies are not active in the same or vertically related markets”, the EU said in a statement.

As Ireland has become a hub for high tech firms, Dornan has specialised in “complex large-scale projects for blue-chip clients predominantly in the advanced technology sector, including data centres and biopharma facilities”. These now make up 85 per cent of their work, according to the company.

The merger aims to bolster Turner’s presence in Ireland and Europe, leveraging Dornan’s expertise to tap into $20 billion in advanced technology project opportunities, the company says.
