Veteran Fine Gael MEP, Sean Kelly, says he wants to stand as the party’s candidate for President of Ireland.

His announcement comes just days after former European Commissioner, Mairead McGuinness, retracted her candidacy due to ill health.

Sean Kelly’s bid has already received the support of Fine Gael’s EU branch. He will need to convince the party as a whole to back him before his name gets to the ballot paper.

“In the days following Mairead McGuinness’ unfortunate withdrawal as Fine Gael’s candidate for President of Ireland on health grounds, I have reflected and given serious consideration to the possibility of seeking the Fine Gael nomination”, Sean Kelly said in a statement.

“After discussing it with my family and supporters, and in light of these changed circumstances, I believe the time is right to put myself forward for this enormously important role.”

Kelly has represented Ireland South as an MEP for 16 years and is a well known figure in Brussels.

Back in Ireland he is still well remembered as the former President of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA).

“I am confident that I can represent the country with integrity, inclusiveness, and a commitment to our communities”, Kelly said.

“To be entrusted with that honour would be the greatest privilege of my life. I take this opportunity to particularly thank my constituents in Ireland South for their unwavering support over the years and their encouragement in recent days. I look forward to the nomination process and to any contest that may follow.

A competitive selection process is good for Fine Gael, and it will ensure that we are best placed heading into this vitally important election.”

Mairead McGuinness had gained Fine Gael backing without too much of a fight. However Kelly is now expected to face other candidates within the party.

Former Minister, Heather Humphreys has also announced her candidacy today.
