Farming, fisheries and food are critical assets for Europe, the EU’s Agriculture Commissioner told the European Parliament this morning.
Christophe Hansen has been setting out the European Commission’s “Vision for Agriculture and Food” which was published last month.
The European Commission says the agri-food sector generates €900 billion per year and 30 million jobs across the EU.
“When I speak to farmers, I hear a strong call for stability and predictability, and also for the recognition of the crucial role that farming and rural areas play in Europe’s economy”, said Christophe Hansen.
“Farming, fishing and food are strategic sectors and a critical asset for Europe. They must be preserved across the continent, and the vision identifies European food sovereignty as an integral part of EU security agenda.
Our policies will continue supporting farmers and the agri food sector in producing safe food, protecting rural landscapes, traditions and livelihoods.”
His change of direction for the EU has been welcomed by the centre-right EPP group.
“For us, it is clear: we do not want any new burdens, but flexibility and solid income for farmers through a strong Common Agricultural Policy,” said the EPP’s agriculture spokesperson and German MEP, Herbert Dorfmann.
The Greens also welcomed the proposals, but warn against watering down climate ambitions in a rush to please farmers now.
“Environmental and climate measures in the agricultural sector remain vague. Agriculture must play a crucial role in combating and adapting to the climate crisis”, said Austrian MEP, Thomas Waitz, who represents the Green’s on the agriculture committee.
Christophe Hansen visited Ireland back in January, following through on his promise to meet farmers from across the EU early in his mandate.
The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has broadly welcomed the EU’s ‘Vision for Agriculture’ plan.
