The Taoiseach will head back to Brussels for one-to-one meetings on Monday, EU sources have confirmed.

Micheál Martin will meet with the new President of the European Council, António Costa. They also met last Monday for an informal EU ‘leaders’ retreat’, but this will be the first formal sitdown between the two.

António Costa was Prime Minister of Portugal during Martin’s first stint as Taoiseach so the two know each other.

Micheál Martin will also head to the European Parliament to meet President Roberta Metsola.

Protocol would usually dictate a meeting with European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, but is unclear if this will take place.

President von der Leyen is due to travel to Paris on Monday to take part in the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit being hosted by President Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During his meetings in Brussels, the Taoiseach is likely to thank the EU for support in the wake of Storm Éowyn.

Other international issues likely to be on the table include relations with the UK following British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s dinner with EU leaders, as well as developments in the Middle East.
