Taoiseach Micheál Martin spoke with Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy this afternoon.

The telephone call comes ahead of the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Monday.

In recent days Zelenskyy and US President Trump have got into a spat over the war in Ukraine. It has led to European leaders doubling down on their support for Ukraine.

Trump’s claim that Zelenskyy is a dictator is “false and dangerous”, said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz this week. That sentiment has been echoed by other European leaders.

Speaking after the call with Volodymyr Zelenskyy this afternoon, the Taoiseach said he offered the Ukrainian President “warm engagement”

“I once again reaffirmed Ireland’s steadfast support for Ukraine and its people”, Micheál Martin said.

“We discussed how, together with the EU, we can advance a just, sustainable and durable peace in Ukraine.

“I also took the opportunity to offer my support for the acceleration of Ukraine’s membership of the EU, and to state Ireland’s continuing financial support for Ukraine.

“I look forward to joining online with other leaders for President Zelenskyy’s summit to discuss this further next week.”

On Monday European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is due to be in Kyiv. She is expected to announce a new package of military support for Ukraine.

Meanwhile EU foreign ministers including Tánaiste Simon Harris will be in Brussels. Russia’s war of aggression is on the top of the agenda.
